Grazing Efficiency Depends on Dental Function

Grazing cattle rely on strong incisors to grasp and tear pasture, and on well‑aligned molars to grind fibrous material effectively. Dental disease disrupts both processes, reducing bite size and slowing grazing behaviour. Over time, this leads to reduced dry‑matter intake and poorer utilisation of available pasture.

In systems where sward height varies or where cattle must work harder to access forage, dental issues can significantly limit performance. Animals may spend longer grazing for the same intake, lose condition, or show reduced growth rates. These effects are often misattributed to pasture quality rather than oral health.

Routine dental assessment allows producers to identify animals struggling with pasture utilisation and adjust grazing pressure, rotation length, or supplementation strategies accordingly. In some cases, strategic culling of severely affected animals improves overall herd performance and pasture efficiency.
